Vitamin D is widely known for boosting bone health, muscle strength and immune function, but also has a range of other benefits, including cancer prevention.
A new study published in Nutrients suggests that common vitamin is effective in preventing and treating colorectal cancer.
Hungarian researchers metanalysis of 50 previous studies, which included more than 1.3 million participants, focusing on potential vitamin D potential effects on risk of cancer, immunity and inflammation.
The common vitamin that is shown reduces autoimmune disease
“The most important conclusion is that Vitamin D plays a critical role in the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer,” the author of the study János Tamás Varga, a doctor, an associate professor at the Budapest University Semmelweis University, told Fox News News.

“Our research clearly supports the severe correlation between 25-hydroxyivitamin D (the main form of vitamin D) and the results of cancer.”
Patients with low levels of vitamin D levels showed poorer forecasts.
Vitamin D has been shown to reduce inflammation, promote cancer cell death, inhibit tumor growth and improve the immune response, as researchers found.

“These mechanisms significantly influence the pathophysiology of colorectal cancer,” said Varga.
In addition to prevention, it was also shown that vitamin D supplementation improves survival rates between patients with advanced colorectal cancer, according to research.
“The results suggest that the effect of vitamin D may depend on factors such as the dose, the individual condition of the patients and the duration of the treatment,” Vargas added.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) has previously referred to studies that suggest that vitamin D could reduce the risk of cancer, particularly colorectal cancer.
“However, large studies have not found that vitamin D complement the risk of colorectal polyps (pre-carcass growth) or cancer,” the ACS said on its website.
“The optimal dose must be adapted to the health status of the individual and the current levels of vitamin D”.
One of the important limitations of the research is that the studies included in the analysis used different doses of vitamin D and involved patients in various stages of cancer, pointed out the authors.
They called for more research to accurately determine the optimal dose and “therapeutic efficiency”.
Recommendations for the North -Americans
“From our research, we recommend that people with a high risk of colorectal cancer control their levels of vitamin D and, if necessary, take a daily supplement of vitamin D of 1000-4000 UI, especially for those with low levels of vitamin D,” he told Fox News Digital Dr. Monika Fekete, doctor at the University of Semmelweis.
“The optimal dose must be adapted to the health status of the individual and the current levels of vitamin D”.

For doctors, researchers suggest routine measurement and routinely complement vitamin D levels for both prevention and treatment.
“Vitamin D plays a crucial role in the treatment and prevention of colorectal cancer, but more research is needed to determine the optimal dose and the specific role of genetic factors,” added Fekette.

“The molecular mechanisms of vitamin D, such as the regulation of oncogenes (mutated genes that can cause cancer) and the inhibition of tumor progression, require more scientific research.”
As the effect of vitamin D is closely related to the patient’s state, the doctor said, treatment recommendations must be customized.

It can also be obtained from dietary sources, according to ACS, including fatty fish and some mushrooms.

There are also some foods fortified by vitamin D, including milk, orange juices and cereals, the previous source was indicated.
People can also take vitamin D supplements to increase their levels.

“Most of the North -Americans do not get enough vitamin D in their diets and many have low levels of vitamin D in the blood,” ACS said on its website.
“Although the role of vitamin D in the reduction of cancer risk is still an active field of research and debate, it is recommended to avoid low levels of vitamin D.”
