“Many of the larger studies that have been conducted in the connection between sleep deprivation and the risk of cardiovascular disease have usually focused on slightly older individuals who already have an increased risk of such diseases,” said study leader Dr. Jonathan Cedernaes, a Uppsala University teacher in Sweden.

The Cedernaes team had 16 healthy young people with good sleep habits visiting a sleeping laboratory, where their meals and activity levels were strictly controlled.

In a session, the guys slept normal for three consecutive nights. At the other session, they just dozed for about four hours a night.

Experts usually recommend that adults get seven to nine hours of night sleep. Sleep deprivation has been associated with impaired cognitive function, a weakened immune system, worse mental health and greater risk of accidents, diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure.

The morning and evening blood samples were collected during the two experimental sessions, as well as after 30 minutes of high intensity exercise.

The researchers measured about 90 proteins in the blood. Many of the protein levels associated with inflammation increased after sleepless nights.

Inflammation can be good and bad. Inflammation is the body’s natural chemical response to an irritating or injury.

Chronic inflammation – when the answer continues well after the threat – may damage blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

“It was interesting that the levels of these proteins would increase … in younger and previously perfectly healthy individuals, after just a few nights of sleep deprivation,” Cedernaes said.

“This means that it is important to emphasize the importance of sleep for cardiovascular health, even early in life.”

The good news is that proteins linked to the positive effects of exercise increased on participants, even if they slept badly.

“With this study, we improve our understanding of the role of the amount of sleep we have parts in cardiovascular health,” said Cedernaes.

“It is important to emphasize that studies have also shown that exercise can compensate at least some of the negative effects that bad sleep can cause,” he added. “But it is also important to note that exercise cannot replace the essential functions of sleep.”

The findings were published last month in Biomarker Research.

Cedernaes said more studies should explore the effects of sleep deprivation on women, elderly, unusual dormants and people with heart disease.

“Our ongoing research, hopefully, will help develop better guidelines on how sleep, exercise and other lifestyle factors can be used to avoid better cardiovascular disease,” he said.
