MOM credits Tiktok video for cancer diagnosis that saves life after discovering a strange nail brand

A Tiktok video played a key role in a mother’s cancer diagnosis after she was pushed to see a doctor on a strange mark on the nails, Swns reported.

Lauren Koltcz, 45, by North Royalton, Ohio, noticed a brown line in the left miniature, but thought it was caused by a deficiency of vitamins.

“I had that feeling of annoyance that was something more than a deficiency of vitamins,” he said.

In February 2025, Koltcz realized that the line spread through the nail.

“I started researching online and found some dermatologists’ Tiktok videos,” he recalled.

In a video, a dermatologist implored those with brown lines on the nails to see a medical professional.

Koltcz reserved an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic, where doctors took a biopsy in the brown area.

“I had that feeling of hassle that was something more than a deficiency of vitamins.”

The next day, he received a call from his doctor, Alison Vidimos, MD, who said they needed to make a biopsy.

“I was worried that the nail pigmentation was very dark, there were different brown shades and the place was wider of 3 millimeters,” said Vidimos, who is Emeritus President of the Dermatology Department of the Cleveland Clinic.

The results showed that Koltcz had a subungal melanoma – a skin cancer that developed under the nail – but they had trapped it in Stage 0, which means that melanoma was only in the upper layer of the skin.

It can affect any nail and discoloration does not always occur, which is why it is so important to take note of the changes in the nails.

“When this type of cancer is captured early, there is more than a 95%survival rate,” Vidimos said in a statement from Cleveland Clinic. “But if it is neglected and not diagnosed in an initial phase, it can be extended to the nodes and make the treatment more difficult.”

According to the doctor, nail melanomas are often diagnosed late, because people do not think about checking their nails.
