Can the bad memories be erased? The technology of the eternal sun of the impeccable mind of the real world

Could science fiction become actually?

In 2004, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, Jim Carrey’s character undergoes a procedure for memory to forget his ex.

But, although the procedure seemed very worn out at that time, technology has brought us closer to the possibility of drying painful memories of our minds, or at least, making them less painful.

According to Dr. Jonathan Rasouli, a neurosurgeon at Northwell Staten Island University Hospital, there are three avant -garde methods that can “silence” and “cushion” traumatic memories and are used to help people with depression and PTSD.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

“TMS is like wireless bridge cables for your brain, but much more accurate,” Rasouli told The Post.

“It is a non -invasive treatment that uses magnetic fields (such as RMN) to stimulate specific parts of the brain, usually aimed at areas involved in the regulation of mood.”

Patients have a magnetic coil placed on the scalp, which sends pulses to specific areas of the brain.

“It is mainly used for treatment resistant depression, but researchers are exploring their impact on memory memory, emotional processing and addiction,” added Rasouli.

According to the document, the theory, still in the early stages of the tests, is that orienting in certain brain circuits can change the way people access their memories.

He said that in the future people could help remodel memory associations, “but probably limited to clinical configuration instead of memory suppression kits.”

Although technology to completely erase memories does not exist, there are methods to cushion them and make them less painful.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS)

DBS is a “brain pacemaker” that is currently used to treat Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, epilepsy, touch and major depression.

Small electrodes are implanted directly in specific areas of the brain, where they send electric impulses to the structures involved in the movement and mood.

“Some studies show that DB can influence emotional memory, reward processing and even reduce traumatic memory, but again, they are very early days,” the document said.

In the future, theoretically it could be used to “silence” traumatic memories, “but it is invasive and unlikely to become a casual outpatient procedure at any time,” he added.

Popranolol therapy

The people are a beta-blocker drug that is usually prescribed to deal with high blood pressure, but researchers have also found that they can “cushion the” emotional punch “of memories” and are used for therapeutic purposes.

“This is probably the closest analog to the concept of eternal sun, but there is no real memory suppression,” said Rasouli.

Instead of doing -you completely forget the memory, this “dream blow” causes it to feel less alive or depressing.

“When you take before remembering a traumatic event, the Popranolol reduces the intensity of the emotional response, essentially” reconstructing “memory with less emotional weight,” the document explained.

“It has been used for experimental PTSD, anxiety and phobias treatments.”
