This little pill, taken by adults and children, can be just a recipe for heart disease.
Dr. Evan Levine is an experienced cardiologist at Scarsdale, New York, who also manages a very popular Tiktok channel, where he is real, from heart attacks and health care attendees to the truth about Starbucks’ favorite drink.
Speaking to the publication, the veteran choir doctor addressed a medicine that is commonly prescribed to help children better surrender in tests and sports, a phenomenon he calls “border child abuse”.
“There are two classes of stimulants for ADHD,” said Levine.
“One is the drug-derived drugs called methilfenidats-ritalin and concerted are the most popular, and the other is the class of amphetamine such as Adderall and Vyvanse.”
The two types, he said, “increase the levels of norepinephrine in the blood, which can lead to slightly higher blood pressure and a slight increase in the risk of arrhythmias.”
This may seem smaller, but new common sense research and questions have Levine to sound the alarm.
“FDA never did your job”
“In 2011, the food and medicine administration used a study to confirm the safety of these stimulating drugs and concluded – between young adults and middle -aged – – [that there is] It does not increase cardiovascular events, “said Levine.
“But the study clearly states that the average monitoring was only 1.3 years,” he added. “So, yes, young people young people have no risk at the 1.3 years with high levels of norepinephrine in the blood.”
Here comes the, though.
“We know that very high levels of Norepinephrina for years, such as people with adrenal tumors and heart failure, can adversely affect the heart; levels are much higher here,” said Levine.
“What if a child takes for 20 years? The FDA never said this. Or an older patient takes this, or someone at risk, people with congenital heart conditions such as an aortic valve bicuspide, that 1.5% of the population has and risks aortic aneurysms? The FDA never did his job.”
And now? Long-term data start to back up.
“In April 2024, they find that when you are following them for eight years, young people from 20 to 40 years old have a risk of 57% greater than young people who are not in these medicines,” said Levine.
“It ends that 1/500 of these patients were diagnosed with cardiomiopathy.”
Millions of children could be at risk
Levine, who also addressed the topic in Tiktok, said that the large volume of North -Americans taking these medicines could be a brand time bomb: Recent data suggests that 1 in 9 children have been diagnosed with ADHD.
“The number of young adults about this can be significant since childhood,” he said.
But it is not just children: a recent study showed that 1 in 17 adults have been diagnosed with ADHD and some experts questioned whether all these cases are legitimate or not.
Levine said that people take it without diagnosis of ADHD, just to help them “focus better on exams or work better on sports”.
In addition, he added, drugs may have a greater risk for adults who may have hypertension or underlying heart disease.
“As a local drug dealer encounters telemedicine”
Telehealth’s services have overlooked the trend, warned Levine, making medicines available to anyone with a credit card and Wi-Fi access.
“Who is veining these services?
According to Levine, what is missing is comprehensive mental health care and careful consideration of non -stimulating options.
“With better behavior health, a psychiatric evaluation available and alternatives such as non -stimulants, of course, the number of recipes of these medicines will decrease,” he said.
A lagoon in sight
Levine said that these medicines are taken seriously, even forbidden, in certain fields, unless a formal diagnosis is shown.
“In Olympic sports, you must apply for an exemption and prove that you have ADHD. Otherwise, you are disqualified,” he said.
“It can only be assumed that there are some who claim a diagnosis to improve their capacity and concentration in a sport.”
So what now? For Levine, the message is simple: ADHD must be treated absolutely, but more careful, more supervision and less blind trust in the pills.
