New study reveals

Semaglutive medicines like Ozempic and Wegovy have exploited in recent years due to their effectiveness in controlling diabetes and weight loss.

The research has revealed additional benefits beyond these primary uses, but some negative side effects have also emerged.

While gastrointestinal problems are the most common side effects, a recent study from the University of British Columbia linked GLP-1 agonists (peptides-1) (peptides-1)) (the class of drugs that includes semaglutides) with an increase in the risk of hair loss.

Researchers analyzed 16 million patients from a health claim database, reducing it to 1,926 semaglutid users and 1,348 Buppropion-Naltrexone users, another type of weight loss medication.

After adjusting to other factors, they found that semaglutides were 50% more likely to suffer from hair loss compared to the other group.

Women were more likely to have this result, twice the risk of men.

“It’s not surprising”

The researchers were not surprised by the results, according to the co-study of Dr. Mahyar Etminan, epidemiologist and CEO of Epilics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Potential limitations

The study had some limitations, said researcher Etminan.

These included the fact that they could not verify hair loss through medical records, but only identified medical codes for hair loss.

Davis, the plastic surgeon, also said that this research refers to another study in which Wegovy users were at a high risk of hair loss (3.3%) compared to the placebo group (1.4%).

“Although this clearly shows an increased risk, 3.3% is still a very low incidence rate,” he said.

This early study, published on the Preprint Medrxiv server, has not yet been reviewed by equals.

“Future studies are needed to check the association between semaglutide and hair loss,” the researchers wrote.

Doctors’ Tips

Those who experience hair loss while taking semagluted medicine must consult with a dermatologist to determine if it is due to a negative effect of these medicines, he advised etminan.

“This is a relatively new adverse event, and it is not known much,” he said. “Questions about who is at risk and if hair loss will reverse when stopping the drug can be addressed in future studies.”

Davis agreed, encouraging patients to talk open with their doctor about how they can better take care of them.

“I think a patient should consider the possible side effects before taking any medicine,” he said.

“Although the rate of incidence of hair loss is still decidedly low, it is a possible commitment that a patient should consider.”

Davis also recommends that his patients take a “abundant diet” formed by fiber, proteins and nutritional foods to ensure proper nutrition while taking a semaglutin medicine.

“Not only that can help hair loss, but a strong diet can slow down the unwanted loss of muscle mass that is often produced,” he said. “An appropriate diet, the conservative calendar for weight loss and the plan for exercise are essential when taking this drug.”

When contacted by Fox News Digital, Novo Nordisk, a manufacturer of Ozempic and Wegovy, confirmed that hair loss is an identified risk by semaglutid and is shown as a side effect on product information.

“In Wegovy’s clinical trials, he was reported to 2.5% of the adult patients treated with Wegovy compared to 1.0% of the adult patients treated with placebo,” said company spokesman.

“Hair loss was more frequently reported in higher weight loss patients (≥20%), suggesting that hair loss events were potentially related to the magnitude of weight loss.”
