Larger adults are being warned of receiving the chikungunya vaccine before traveling.

Vaccination IXchiq, developed by Valneva to prevent the Chikungunya virus transmitted by mosquitoes, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in November 2023 as the first of this type.

The approval applies to anyone 18 years old and more who is at risk of being exposed to the virus.

Advice follows reports of “serious adverse events”, including neurological and heart events in people who received the vaccine.

Two of the 17 events led to death from serious complications. A death was caused by encephalitis or inflammation in the brain, the alert said.

It was reported that those who experienced adverse effects of the vaccine were between the ages of 62 and 89.
