Larger adults are being warned of receiving the chikungunya vaccine before traveling.
Vaccination IXchiq, developed by Valneva to prevent the Chikungunya virus transmitted by mosquitoes, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in November 2023 as the first of this type.
The approval applies to anyone 18 years old and more who is at risk of being exposed to the virus.

But the FDA and the Disease Control and Prevention Centers (CDC) published a security warning on May 9, which recommended that adults over 60 years old be used the use of vaccine for fatal complications.
“The FDA and the CDC will continue to evaluate post-marketing reports for ixchiq,” says the launch.

“While Ixchiq’s safety for use in 60 -year -old individuals is evaluating more, the FDA and CDC recommend a pause in the use of the vaccine in this age group. The FDA and the CDC will update the public when the agencies complete their evaluation of this security problem.”
Advice follows reports of “serious adverse events”, including neurological and heart events in people who received the vaccine.

Two of the 17 events led to death from serious complications. A death was caused by encephalitis or inflammation in the brain, the alert said.
It was reported that those who experienced adverse effects of the vaccine were between the ages of 62 and 89.

Most people recover in a week, but some may experience “serious and disabled” joint pain for weeks or months.
