The “Skinnytok” weight loss trend could lead to food deprivation, precaution of experts

Social networks can be a great source of fitness, nutrition and well -being tips, but it also has some potentially harmful content.

Enter “Skinnytok”, a popular weight loss trend that runs on Tiktok.

The creators combine the hashtag with videos that share various ways to get down weight, many of them depending on the goal of reaching as much as possible in a short time.

On April 26, there were more than 60,000 videos of creators talking about Skinnytok. One of these is Mandana Zarghami, 25, owner and influencer of the company in Miami, Florida.

“What you eat in private will be publicly displayed,” Zarghami told his followers in a recent video.

The influencer spoke with Fox News Digital about his perception of Skinnytok’s worldwide trend.

“There is an emphasis on controlling portions, prioritizing daily movement and knowing which foods will make you feel better from the inside and more,” he said.

The creator acknowledged, however, that some of the contents could trigger those who have fought against messy food.

“Although some content under Skinnytok’s tendency may promote motivation around health and well -being, it can also glamorize unhealthy unhealthy habits or unrealistic body standards if you follow an influencer or a creator of wrong content,” said Zarghami.

At the same time, he said, “Control what you consume.”

“What you eat in private will be in public.”

“It is a bit difficult to be sensitive to each group, because many of the people who talk about Skinnytok on their platforms also fought disorderly food and overcome it with healthy lifestyles,” added Zarghami.

Dr. Brett Osborn, a Florida neurosurgery and longevity expert, said he has witnessed the “devastating consequences” of the extreme first -hand thinness, including women with fractured bones caused by malnutrition.

“This is a growing crisis and is being dangerously celebrated on social media under hashtags like #skinnytok,” he told Fox News Digital.

“When young people pursue after extreme thinness through hunger diets, they invite their lives to their lives. The body, deprived of caloric energy, becomes extremely fragile.”

In young adolescents and adults, the malnutrition disrupts hormones, weakens immunity, deteriorates cognitive function and can cause durable damage to their brains still in developing, according to Osborn.

The physical effects of malnutrition may include hair loss, reduced bone density and, in severe cases, irreversible structural damage, he added.

Low body weight or minimum body fat is not equivalent to good health, the doctor said.

“Inanition is not a virtue: it is a abandonment of the nutritional needs of the body,” he said. “The tendency of Skinnytok Preia on impressive young people, especially young women, encouraging them to reduce them instead of prospering.”

Instead of focusing on the “extreme limb”, Osborn called for an approach to the muscle construction, which he described as the “angular stone of vitality”.

“In greater adults, muscle loss – or sarcopenia – is a sign of medical warning linked to an increase in risks of falls, fractures, hospitalizations, cognitive decay and even mortality,” he said.

“Muscle loss not only weakens the body; it erodes the mind, accelerating the appearance and progression of dementia. The body and brain are interconnected and when one suffers, so does the other.”

“The muscles are your shield against the disease and the decrease. Being lean and strong, not thin and fragile, is the true measure of health,” a doctor said. (Istock)

For those who adopt the tendency of Skinnytok, Osborn recommends that the focus change on the muscle construction.

“The muscles are your shield against the disease and the decrease. Being lean and strong, not thin and fragile, it is the true measure of health,” he said.

“Instead of glorifying inanition, we should teach our young people to feed their bodies and minds, build resilience through the muscle obtained by strength training and prioritize body function on any short -term trend.”

Dr. Jillian Lampert, Vice President of the Emily Program, a Minnesota -based eating disorder treatment center, also requested the possible risks of Skinnytok’s tendency.

“It is a vicious cycle that quickly spans from external messaging to internal criticism.”

“This content glorifies dangerously content that encourages people to take drastic measures to change body,” Fox News Digital told. “It also faces people who are already struggling with their body image and thoughts of size and form, reinforcing the idea that being thin at all costs is the norm.”

The behaviors in many of the videos are “often extreme” and limit foods or groups of food, said Lampert.

According to the expert, the algorithms used by social media platforms make the content even more dangerous amplifying the messages.

“Looking at a Tiktok with a less toxic body image content will teach the algorithms to send -you are increasingly until your feed has become an avalanche of toxic content,” said Lampert.

As people move by countless videos of “ideal” bodies and lifestyles, often leads them to conclude that they are not thin enough or attractive enough.

“ Continuous evaluation of eating appearance and eating habits can make a person hypercritic and hyperfixed in perceived defects, thus feeding the food cycle less, which often leads to overhanging and overexification, which often involves fatigue and loss of control around food, ” said Lampt.

“It is a vicious cycle that quickly spans from external messaging to internal criticism.”

Dr. Anastasia Rairigh, a family doctor and specialist in the obesity medicine of the virtual health platform, warned that extreme behaviors of weight loss can be fatal.

“Because a person seriously limits his caloric intake, the body struggles to maintain the correct electrolyte balance,” he shared with Fox News Digital.

“When a person’s electrolytes are severely unbalanced, they may experience hearts or, in severe cases, cardiac arrest. Even if a person does not experience this, severe food deprivation can cause heart, bones and brain damage.”

People who are deprived of eating may also notice effects on cognition, mood and sleep, Rairigh warned.

“Modeling a healthy attitude towards food is critical to combating the negative influence of toxic diet culture,” he said, recommending that people focus on food as a source of energy rather than enemy.

“Support for young people to focus on activities and interests outside social media has also been proven useful,” he said.

“Encourage and facilitate positive activities in the real world as contrary to social media time.”

“Modeling a healthy attitude towards food is critical to combat the negative influence of toxic diet culture.”

Those who show signs of messy food should see a doctor, Rairigh advised.

“Although messy food is deadly, there is hope and treatment. Don’t be afraid to receive help.”

Zarghami, the creator of Tiktok, reiterated the importance of establishing positive examples on social media.
